Content WritingBeginner2-3 hours per issue

Newsletter Engine

The hard part of a newsletter is not writing one email; it is producing something worth opening every week. This skill uses fixed sections and an idea bank to reduce decision fatigue and reserve energy for the argument.

Workflow

  1. 1

    Build an idea bank

Continuously collect links, data, reader questions and your own takes in one list, tagged by section. Choose from the bank each week instead of starting from zero the day before sending.

  2. 2

    Fix the section structure

Use four sections: one argument, one case, one tool or resource, and one reader question. Keep each 150-250 words and a consistent rhythm so readers know what they will get.

  3. 3

Write subject line and preview text

Write five subject lines per issue: numbered, question, counterintuitive, benefit and curiosity. Keep them under 42 characters and make preview text add information rather than repeat the subject.

  4. 4

    Review 48 hours after sending

Record opens, clicks, unsubscribes and replies, and mark the best and worst sections. After four issues, cut consistently low-click sections and invest in what readers actually respond to.

FAQ

How long should a newsletter be?

Aim for a 3-5 minute read, roughly 600-1,000 words. Each issue should have one clear argument rather than ten stacked links.

What if readers do not send questions?

Ask in communities and emails, or turn common inquiries into anonymous Q&A. In early issues you can answer your own questions to set the norm.
