Token
The smallest unit of text a model processes, often a word, subword or character group.

In plain language
Text is split into tokens before computation. One English token is roughly 0.75 words, while a Chinese character often takes one to two tokens. API pricing, context limits and output caps are all measured in tokens.
Example
A 1,000-character Chinese passage typically consumes 1,500-2,000 tokens.
